Wonga & Barak, A Story from Down Under
About three weeks ago I was contacted by an Australian named Mark Lusk who was asking me some tricks on composing images for Rubik’s Cube mosaics. It can be a bit of a trick getting the luminosity balance just right so I offered to take a look.
Mark sent me two images, one of a Mr. Simon Wonga and one of Mr. William Barak. I had no idea who there two gentlemen were so I googled them and was moved to write about the project here on the site.
It turns out that the gentlemen were aboriginals from the Melbourne area (were Mark and his friends are from) and they worked to protect their clans from the imperialist practices of Victorian Englishmen. Like the Native American tribes here in the states, many clans of aboriginal peoples were forced off their land and onto reservation-like tracts of barren land and were mistreated and handled like slaves for many years, even decades.
Wonga was the first “chief” of the tribe to interact with the whites after their initial colonization of the Melbourne area and after his death, Barak who had received a mission education, became the tribe’s new chief. He went on to become a successful negotiator for the tribe and a forefather for the aboriginals’ fight for social justice.
My best friend Russell Beaver is of Native American descent and this story hit close to home… despite being on the other side of the planet. I was happy to offer up my design skills for their cause and quickly sent them over a composition ready for assembly. Little did I know how stunning it would turn out.
I just earlier today received a photo of the final mosaic and asked their permission to share it, and this story with you all.

‘Peaceful Warriors’ was created by: Mark Lusk, Dean Lusk and Daniel Galbraith. Check out their Facebook page here.

144D Article →
The heady art blog 144D asked me some interview questions. I gave them answers like this one… “Art has been a powerful tool in society since the very beginning. We learn a lot about cultures through their artistic expression. It’s roll economically waxes and wanes but it’s importance is unflinching. A culture without art is not.”

I Just received permission to use this song in my next project. I’m ridiculously excited by this. The song is Uppermost’s “Independent”. It’s a perfect compliment to the time-lapse video I’m thinking of.
Please check out Uppermost’s Beatport page and help me thank him with a paid download.

A couple years ago I wrote a set of tutorial and templates to help kids use the cube to learn about math. On occasion I get snippets like this and it really makes me happy.

A twitter Interview I did with La Licuadora, a Venezuelan TV show. So fun. Also, please note that they used the video Sam Klee of UThinkMedia put together back in 2010. He’s not credited properly.
